So Putin is globalist as most of our ruling class. He is for more world integration and state participation in all parts of society.
What makes him seen as a nationalist is become he is willling to fight for Russia position in global hierarchy. This implies that ruling class is cartel, alliance of people with very different interests. Anf this differences will break cartel itself. House divided can't stand.
But far more important is that world's population has had enough of integration. So far, elites have been more or less keep situation manageable from their side. But, humanity has natural diversity (altitudes, cultures...) which has been suspressed. At the more they press sameness (sold, ironically, as diversity) the less people will be able to be identified with current political system. The more they press, the greater
avalance of will arrive.
Ironically, here is lesson from fall of Roman Empire. Then rulling elite stopped accepting reforms from lower classes which left violence as only way to any reform. All those "power keepers" were wiped out together with their families.
