That's the correct way of using 'their' in that sentence. That's an example of what we do when we do not know the gender of the person we're talking about. This is completely normal, and has nothing to do with gender ideology.

Up until 2017 the standard default when you did not know the gender of a person was to say "him/his" unless you found out it was a woman.

This usage that has crept into our vernacular only started in 2017 and it was newsworthy when it occurred.

For the entire 40 years of my life, at least around here, you have referred to an unknown person or dog as "they" or "it."
