We are leaving in the morning to go camping for the weekend. The Texas Parks and Wildlife has a program for families where they send you a list of things to bring and then they provide tents and other stuff and they teach your family how to set up a tent, fish, canoe, build a fire, etc. I am mentioning this for all you other single moms out there...there may be a similiar program in your state and if you have boys...they need this! Learning from nature is really good for them. My oldest is a girl and when she and I try to do something like this it usually ends up looking like some bad Lucy and Ethel episode. I took the kids to the lake a few weeks ago and we had a really good time except that the wind was blowing really hard and I couldn't get our fire started and all the food I brought had to be cooked. SO...to solve this problem I erected a tent over the fire with a beach towel....which worked to really get our fire going...but I never knew that beach towels were so flammable. The kids won't let me live it down still..they say, "If all else fails just throw a beach towel on the fire." (Which of course is a a gross exaggeration of what really happened...) SO...we are headed out to learn the RIGHT way to do this stuff. I have found state parks to be a really great resource for families.
