George S. Patton; “Rommel, you magnificent bastard! I read your book!”

I realized that the pioneers in modern day polygyny had no fathers in the movement, no mentors to guide them and show them the way. They went ahead and succeeded against all odds and made it up as they went along. According to the above definition, that would make them magnificent bastards.

So my takeoff of Patton’s statement would be; “@andrew, you magnificent bastard! I want to read your book!”

Hahahahaha! Rommel was a brilliant tactician, a patriot, and a man of honor, so if I ever write anything that would be as influential and useful as his book, I'll be pretty happy.

Steve, you may have pushed me over the edge. Let's play some reindeer games.

Anybody reading this who wants to play, private message me (PM only; I will not respond on this thread to submissions) your completion of this sentence: "If I could ask Andrew one question (about marriage and family--let's stay focused), it would be...." I'll report back here as the situation develops and let you know what's happening. If I get a critical mass of interest and stimulating questions, I'll start writing....

Shoot, you are going to be wanting intelligent questions.
I’ll work on that.

Because I'm not making an open-ended offer to just sit here and answer random questions all day. Like I said, I'm looking for critical mass. If I can answer a lot of questions in one batch and put together a useful body of information that has some kind of coherent system, then I'm game, but it's basically an all or nothing proposition.

Another angle that you might be wondering about has to do with transparency, and I'm not trying to hide anything. Once I've seen what kind of responses I get, I'll post the results here. I'd just like the chance for everyone to go with their gut without basing it off of what other people are asking so I can generate some potentially useful statistical information.

Does that make sense, or are you still wondering?

I just wanted to ask you a question on the thread that you said not to ask questions on. It was a minor act of rebellion, a juvenile joke, a microaggression more than anything. Now I just feel bad that you out so much effort in to the answer.

Ha! Don’t feel bad! I figured somebody would prolly ask, so you win!

I have pondered for some time and not come up with any questions.
But I know that you have answers for questions that I haven’t even thought about.

Let's pursue this a little bit, because I think you're on to something.

I said I'd operate in transparency: So far this thread has had 123 views (I know that includes multiple views by different people, so it's not 123 viewers, but it's the only metric we have), and I have 0 questions submitted. Let's see where that goes over the next week. I'm still looking for input, and mostly just testing the market to see what the demand looks like. Meanwhile....

Against my better judgment, I'm going to share something here that I'd rather just PM you (steve) about, but here we go. I remember seeing something several years ago (maybe on facebook?) along the lines of some easy method to generate content to write a book (don't remember the catchy title, oh well...). I figured WTH? and gave it five minutes of my attention, and it actually turned out to be pretty good (IMO). The secret was this: Write down a list of the top 10 questions people ask you. Get that out of your system. Now make a list of the top 10 questions you wish they'd ask. Hey presto, there are 10 chapters for your book; add an introduction and a conclusion and you've got a 12-chapter book that writes itself. Made sense then; makes sense now. Makes sense with oak leaves in light of your comment above.

So why haven't you already written that book, Andrew? Great question, so glad you asked! But my answer is "I don't know". I don't think it's because I'm too lazy, or afraid of what kind of reception I'll get (although I'm willing to consider those as contributing factors). Generally, I don't make big moves until I have some certainty that I'm moving in the right direction, and my default position in the absence of such certainty is to wait for clarification. In hindsight, I'm often (not always, but very often) able to see what the hold up was, but it's not so clear when you're in the holding pattern, yaknowwhatImean? All I know is I'm waiting for some kind of direction or confirmation (or for something else to materialize that will explain why the thing I'm waiting for is never going to happen).

However, you're (I'm looking at you, steve...) pushing buttons in a way that reminds me of those elder threads we had going awhile back, and the bit quoted above is a direct tie-in to that little lifehack book-writing thing I've been carrying around in the back of my brain for several years.

So, "more will be revealed", as we say around my house, but I'm still waiting for orders, so to speak. Any prayers y'all want to add for clarity and direction would be greatly appreciated!

a book about polygamy from a practicing, non mormon, Christian, that lays out some big questions and then goes ahead and tackles all the arguments against polygamy would be awesome! A go to guide that isn't hundreds of years old. I would like more information on the ins and outs of how it works everyday. I know what christian monogamy looks like in practice. I have no idea how Christian Polygamy looks in practice. A day in the Life of Andrew!

One model that I have, that I enjoyed immensely, is Stephen King's On Writing. Not a fan of his ouevre, but that book is about one half stories from his youth and stories about his writing, and then the second half is his actual advice on writing. Something like that, anyway....

So I just got a list of 15 questions from a very thoughtful contributor (names may be revealed later with their permission, but withholding for now) that suggests another section of the book, which would look an awful lot like the classic "FAQ" section of a website. So to recap (in no particular order): (a) some biographical info, day-in-the-life stuff, (b) what I think needs to be said, "what I wish people would ask", and (c) answers to some of the actually most frequently asked questions. In other words, not just getting those FAQs "out of my system", but addressing at least some of them.

Pondering....
