What is a "help meet"?

Genesis 2:18 tells us "I will make him a help met for him".

Let us break this down in the Hebrew:

The phrase is ezer kenegedo.

ezer is the Hebrew word for "helper", coming from the root word nagad which means "to be face to face". The noun form neged is used in Genesis 21:16 where Hagar went and sat "opposite" of her son a distance away.

The prefix ke in the word kenegedo means "like".

The suffice o in the word kenegedo means "of him"

So, if we put all this truth together we discover ezer kenegedo means "a helper like one opposite of him". So, Eve was made to be the opposite of Adam - opposite personality, opposite attributes, opposite concerns! I believe that this is one reason those seeking a spouse attract those who are opposite. God knows our needs!

Wow! That also gives a deeper understanding to why God called His Holy Spirit our "helper", too!! There couldn't be one who was more "opposite" of all of who we are (in the natural, of course - our re-born spirits continue to take on His very nature as we surrender to and walk in His Spirit).

Isn't it so awesome how there is constant revelation in God's Word (which, of course, is because His Word is a Living Word! :) ). No matter how deep we dig (in this earthly existence) we will never come to the bottom of that well!!

I really really like the way you explained that! It makes perfect sense! That's why men and women are so different from one another while still complimenting each other too!
