The US used to be much more of a high trust society.

I was thinking today about the girl who was returning home from work on public transportation and was killed by a random knucklehead who had already proven himself to not be worthy of his freedom.
In yesteryear her family would not have been concerned for her safety being out and alone. Today the risk is much greater because we no longer live in a society where overall trust in other people is justified.
Do you feel that we are becoming a low trust society?
What do you see as the causes for our present state?
What does our future look like to you? Why does it look that way to you?
While I am specifically addressing the situation in my home country, I am in no excluding discussion about other countries. But let’s not discuss situations that we aren’t involved in. Your personal experience is welcome here.
